Zagreb – the concentration of medical experience and knowledge

The city of Zagreb, which some may call “Little Vienna” and “the city with a heart”, is not just a centre of great politics, business, finance and administration but also a charming city famous for its hospitality, historical sites and numerous events.

Zagreb's streets and squares, a place for a promenade, to enjoy coffee, socialising and business meetings emanate with a dynamic combination of Mediterranean geniality and northern business efficiency which wins people over at the first glance.

Zagreb is proud of its numerous green areas to which it has been paying special attention since the second half of the 19thcentury. At that time an urbanistic plan for the layout of the Lower Town (Donji Grad) was adopted, which also included the Lenuci Horseshoe – a representative urban unit which consisted of a number of squares and parks in the Lower Town of Zagreb. The Zrinjevac, Maksimir, Ribnjak parks and the Botanical Garden are some of the green oases where you can take a rest from exploring the city’s hidden corners and surrender to the calming rustle of the treetops.

The starting point of the rich medical knowledge and experience of the generations of Croatian doctors is the School of Medicine in Zagreb, the internationally renowned institution of higher education, which in 2017 marks 100 years since its establishment.

It was in fact Zagreb’s School of Medicine that founded all the medical faculties in Croatia and the majority of them in the neighbouring countries of the region, and thereby enabled the testing and introduction of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in many health institutions. The winner of the prestigious title of the Medical Oscar in Ophthalmology in 2015 also came from Zagreb.

With regards to the historical tradition and concentration of science and knowledge in medicine, in Zagreb and its surroundings there operate many recognised healthcare institutions which deal with ophthalmology, orthopaedics, aesthetic surgery, dermatology, cosmetology, as well as the treatment of illnesses via pleasant and painless processes of inhaling hyperbaric oxygen at an elevated pressure in hyperbaric chambers.

Zagreb is also a significant and fast-paced destination of dental tourism. A number of dental centres and polyclinics offer a wide range of services from the fields of prosthetics, implantology, orthodontics and other dental branches with the application of the latest technologies.
