A Storm Party for the Sleeping Giant of Klek

A Storm Party for the Sleeping Giant of Klek

Klek Mountain holds a special status among Croatian mountaineers. Partly because the first Croatian mountaineering school was founded there, and partly because of its mysterious and mystical past, around which many legends were woven.

According to folklore, Klek Mountain was created after a clash between the giants and the gods. In ancient times, the powerful gods would keep all the food and drink for themselves, which made the giants very angry. One of the giants, Klek, went to war over it with Volos, a god who wielded so much power that he could petrify everyone in the world with his magical sword.

Such a fate befell Klek too, and so his body and head created the mountain that watches over the town of Ogulin almost like a caring mother. The mountain peak, Klek, measures 1182 m, and can be reached by climbing a difficult rock that represents the head of the sleeping giant, with long hair and beard made up of the finest mountain meadows filled with playful butterflies. The giant body is spread out, taking up the entire mountain, and ends with feet that are represented by Klečice rocks.

How Did Witches, Fairies and Elves Come to Be on the Mystical Mountain of Klek?

There is another Klek legend based on this sleeping giant that has not woken from his slumber in centuries. When the skies above Ogulin turn dark with storm clouds, and the wind picks up, cracking like a whip, the locals know it’s time to batten down the hatches, because soon witches, fairies and elves will descend on the mountain. They come from all over the world to carry out a special mission.

Fairies with long blonde hair, shrieking with delight and making loud noise, witches wearing large black hats, flying on broomsticks and singing while the wind is howling, elves nimbly jumping from cloud to cloud, avoiding thunder and lightning... All this loud singing and dancing above the giant’s head has only one goal – to wake the sleeping Klek.

Therefore, if you find yourself in the Ogulin area during thunderstorms, remember it’s all just one big party aimed at waking up Klek. Who knows, some day they just might succeed!
